The son of Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates pleaded guilty Monday to being under the influence of cocaine, his latest in a long string of criminal offenses.

Lowell Gates, 32, of Sierra Madre pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge as his trial was about to begin in El Monte Municipal Court.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Terry Schwartz said Gates is scheduled to be sentenced May 19 and has agreed to be confined in a live-in drug rehabilitation program for at least 90 days.

After that, he will be permitted to work outside the facility during the day, reporting back in the evening. That phase of his sentence will last another six to nine months, Schwartz said.

Gates, who was arrested March 9 with five other people after sheriff’s deputies arrived at a Rosemead garage to investigate a report of a suspicious person, also will be placed on probation, she said.
