The bulldozer of a private contractor building a parking lot for La Jolla Country Day School hit a four-inch gas line Monday, causing gas to leak throughout the school and down a stretch of Regents Road.

At 7:45 a.m., San Diego Gas & Electric Co. was notified of the incident, which occurred at Regents Road and Eastgate Mall. Roads were closed for several hours along Regents Road between Miramar Street and Eastgate Mall while crews worked to repair the leak.

The severed pipe, at the southwest corner of La Jolla Country Day School, was closed by 9:30 a.m., and no injuries resulted from the leaking gas, said Jim Stewart, director of public relations for the school.

“A lot of kids left the school when they were told to stay out of the classrooms until the gas dissipated,” Stewart said. “It only took a couple hours before they were able to go into the classrooms.”
