Mattingly Makes Up for Slow Start
There was really no concern when Don Mattingly opened the season in a hitting slump. Everyone knew it wouldn’t last long.
It lasted six games. In the seventh, the .331 lifetime hitter, snapped out of it. After going 3 for 22, he went 5 for 6 at Toronto, scored two runs and drove in another, to lead the New York Yankees to a 12-3 romp over the Blue Jays.
Mattingly had one of the Yankees’ 10 doubles, which was one short of the American League record set by the Detroit Tigers in 1934. The Yankees’ 18 hits made it easy for John Candelaria to go the distance for the first time in two years.
Candelaria, in his second impressive start this season, gave up nine hits, but struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Dave Winfield went 2 for 5, drove in three runs and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He is 13 for 25 (.520) and has driven in 11 runs.
