Dial-a-Ride Merger OKd

The City Council voted this week to consolidate its Dial-a-Ride program with the city of Baldwin Park to cut costs and expand service to elderly and handicapped residents.

Both cities operate four-van fleets that will be combined if the program is approved by the county Transportation Commission later this year. “The demand for service from our elderly and handicapped doesn’t stop at city boundaries,” Gus Salazar, West Covina’s director of human services, told the council Monday.

Salazar said that under Transportation Commission incentives for joint transit efforts, the cities could each save about $50,000 a year. West Covina residents could also benefit from the dial-a-ride service Baldwin Park offers to the general public, he said. West Covina does not offer such a service.

Baldwin Park, which initiated the merger, approved it last week.
