David W. Campbell, television and radio announcer for the San Diego Padres, has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol--the second case made public this week in which a member of the Padres’ organization faces DUI charges.

Campbell was arrested early Jan. 9 near Miramar and Eastgate Mall roads by a police officer who reported that Campbell was driving erratically at 70 m.p.h. in a 50-m.p.h. zone, and that his car hit the center divider. Campbell reportedly told the officer that he had been drinking.

In a San Diego Municipal Court proceeding Wednesday, the Campbell case was postponed until April 27.

“I’ve got no comment,” Campbell said Wednesday night. “It’s something that happened in January. It’s still in litigation. What good would it do for me to make a comment?”

A court official said court records show that Campbell, 46, was also arrested for drinking and driving in 1985, but that that case resulted in two non-drinking traffic convictions--for an illegal lane change and for failure to use a turn signal.

Campbell also declined to talk about the 1985 case.

Team spokesman Bill Beck said that Chub Feeney, president of the ballclub, had no comment on Campbell’s recent arrest.

Campbell, a former second baseman for the Padres, has been affiliated with the team 11 years. He is part of the broadcast team for the games on KFMB radio and KUSI-TV (Channel 51).

On Sunday, Padres pitcher Ed Whitson was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in Solana Beach. Feeney said Tuesday that the Padres will not take disciplinary action against Whitson.
