A 33-year-old Oceanside man was shot twice in the back Friday, police said.

Police said they have no suspects and know no motive for the attack, which occurred at 2 a.m. in the 400 block of North Myers Street.

The victim, Theodore Herrera, was found lying in the street with two .22-caliber gunshot wounds to his lower back, police said. He was taken by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he was listed in fair but stable condition after surgery, said Alda Arevalo, spokeswoman for Scripps.

Police said a woman reported that she heard the shots and then heard a man screaming, “Somebody help me! I’ve been shot in the spine!”

Herrera gave the officers conflicting stories, police said. “He told the officers he was walking down the street and a sniper shot him,” said Bob George, Oceanside police spokesman. “Then he told them that he was riding in a car and, when he got out, they shot him.”

George said Herrera was uncooperative and police have no leads.
