The University of Florida, reacting to reports of cocaine use by former Gator basketball player Vernon Maxwell, reported 14 positive tests for drugs out of 1,265 tests administered by the school from July 1987 through March 1988.
“The results continue to show that 1% of the total tests run on our athletes are positive,” Athletic Director Bill Arnsparger said. He declined to identify the athletes involved.
In an Orlando Sentinel story published Thursday, Maxwell was quoted as saying he tested positive for cocaine use at least twice during his career. The next morning, he denied making the statement.
