Track and Field Roundup : Devers, Young, Marsh All Are Double Winners for the Bruins

UCLA’s Gail Devers, Kevin Young and Mike Marsh were double winners Saturday as the Bruin men’s and women’s track teams easily beat Kansas State and Houston in a triangular meet at Drake Stadium.

The UCLA men’s team scored 92 1/2 points, while Kansas State had 53 and Houston 36 1/2. The Bruin women compiled 89 points, with Kansas State and Houston scoring 40 and 39, respectively.

Devers won the long jump at 22 feet 2 1/2 inches and the 200 meters in 22.8 seconds. Young won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14 seconds and then outkicked Houston’s Kevin Mason in the stretch to take the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 49.24.

Marsh won the 100 in 10.35 and the 200 in 20.69. Kansas State’s Ken Harrison was also a double winner. He won the long jump at 26-0 and the triple jump at 55-3 1/2.

In hammer-throw competition held earlier in the day at Cal State Los Angeles, UCLA’s David Wilson improved on his school record with a throw of 218 feet.

The meet was also scored on a dual-meet basis. Bob Larsen’s men’s team improved its record to 10-0.
