Mike Ross singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning and Cal State Fullerton defeated Nevada Las Vegas, 6-5, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game Sunday at Fullerton.

Fullerton trailed, 5-0, after five innings, but rallied with one run in the sixth, two in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the 10th.

Fullerton catcher Brent Mayne doubled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. Mayne, who holds the PCAA’s longest hitting streak, also broke the Cal State Fullerton record of 23 games previously held Tom Thomas (1983) and Mike Vanderburg (1982).

The victory moves Fullerton (31-11, 9-3) into a tie for second place with Las Vegas (30-13, 9-3) Both teams trail Fresno State, which is 11-0 in the PCAA.

Ross’s game-winning single capped a two-out rally that began with Rex Peters’ single. Shane Flores then lined a ball to left field that fooled James Martin. By the time Martin recovered, the ball fell in front of him, and Peters was safe at third base.

Ross then drove the ball up the alley in right-center field for the game winning hit. Paul Johnson (5-3), the third Fullerton pitcher, got the victory. Marty Lequerica (0-1) took the loss.

“That was the biggest win this season in my mind,” Fullerton Coach Larry Cochell said. “Coming from behind like that and also not losing any more ground to Fresno are both very important for this team if we are to have a chance at it (the PCAA championship).”

Keith Kaub drove in Fullerton’s first run with a single in the sixth and the Titans trailed, 5-1. Pinch-hitter Jason Rolish opened the seventh for Fullerton with a single. Bobby Jones then reached on an error and the runners advanced on a wild pitch.

Greg Mannion singled home Rolish but Jones was out at the plate on a strong throw by Las Vegas right-fielder Scott Childress. Mannion reached second on the throw home. He then scored on a fielding error by shortstop Gary Forrester to cut the lead to, 5-3.
