Animals rights activists held an all-night vigil outside a research and teaching hospital in San Francisco after staging a 30-mile march to protest the use of live animals in medical and scientific research. The protesters said they will continue to stage rallies throughout the week at the University of California Medical Center to press their demands for an end to psychological experiments on animals, the right of medical students to refuse to dissect animals and the right to conduct unannounced inspections of animal research laboratories. In Los Angeles, about 50 activists kicked off “Laboratory Animal Liberation Week” with a demonstration at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which they accused of “atrocities against animals.” County animal control officials are currently investigating those allegations involving Biosphere, a licensed vendor. Hospital spokesman Ron Wise said Cedars is cooperating in the investigation.
