Local News in Brief : San Fernando Council Takes Aim at Toy Guns

Share

San Fernando City Council members on Tuesday night banned the manufacture, sale, marketing and distribution of toy guns in the city, despite pending state legislation that would offer such restrictions.

Police Chief Dominick Rivetti said he decided to push for a separate city ordinance because “we’re not sure what the state’s going to do with theirs.”

Rivetti also said the ordinance would bring San Fernando in line with the city and county of Los Angeles, both of which have similar ordinances.

The ordinance restricts toy firearms “including, but not limited to, any pistol, revolver, gun, rifle, shotgun, sawed-off shotgun, machine gun, air gun, pellet gun or BB gun” made of such materials as plastic, wood or metal. It exempts replicas of antique firearms.

State law now prohibits only the brandishing of such toy guns, but several bills pending in the Legislature would ban their sale and distribution as well.
