Share

A Pomona man was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison for shooting to death a 17-year-old youth on the Corona Expressway.

Javier Arsaga, 20, who pleaded guilty in January to second-degree murder, was a passenger in a car driven by Richard B. Hamilton, 19, of Montclair, who is scheduled to be sentenced today to the same term, Deputy Dist. Atty. Gary Hearnsberger said. Hamilton also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

They were among five people arrested in the July 24 slaying of Russell Pirrone, 17, of Pomona, who was shot to death as he drove onto the expressway in Pomona. The shooting, prompted by an earlier argument between an occupant of each car, occurred during a rash of roadway shootings in Southern California last summer.

Two other passengers who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit assault, Angel B. Reyes, 20, and David R. Walsh, 19, both of Pomona, were sentenced Wednesday by Superior Court Judge James Piatt to three years in prison. Another passenger, Sarah Stafford, 21, also of Pomona, will be sentenced May 2 to four years in prison for the same conspiracy charge, Hearnsberger said.
