Local News in Brief : Rail Trash Disposal Urged
Elected officials from 28 San Gabriel Valley cities were urged Thursday to seek proposals from contractors to ship trash by rail to remote areas outside Los Angeles County.
The recommendation came from a committee of the San Gabriel Valley Assn. of Cities that oversaw a study by the Southern California Assn. of Governments on the feasibility of taking trash to remote areas for disposal. The study concluded that hauling trash by rail is “a potential solution to the solid waste disposal crisis projected for the 1990s.”
West Covina Mayor Nancy Manners said the next step will be to ask the county Sanitation Districts to prepare a “request for proposal” document that would invite contractors to offer plans that would include distant disposal sites and systems for taking trash there.
