College Spring Sports : Dow’s 2-Hitter Leads Moorpark to 2-1 Win

Freshman right-hander De Dow pitched a two-hitter and Moorpark scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 2-1 victory over Santa Monica in a Western State Conference softball game at Moorpark on Friday.

Dow had a perfect game through four innings before allowing a one-out single to Susie Bucher.

Dow, who has had two perfect games this season, had retired 33 consecutive batters in the past three conference games for Moorpark (22-1-1, 9-0 in conference play).

Bucher scored Santa Monica’s only run in the fifth when Tina Altobello’s sacrifice bunt was thrown into right field by first baseman Laura Detweiler.

Moorpark rallied for two runs in the sixth when Heidi Leal’s two-out, two-run single scored Juli Myers and Detweiler.

Malia Ouzts went 3 for 3 with one stolen base for Moorpark, while Detweiler was 2 for 3.

In other softball games:

CS Northridge 5-1, CS Dominguez Hills 0-0--Debbie Dickmann pitched a no-hitter in the opener and returned to pitch 4 innings of hitless relief in the second game, leading the Matadors (47-11, 16-2) to a sweep of a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at Dominguez Hills.

Dickmann did not walk a batter and struck out three in the opener. The win in the second game improved her record to 18-3.

BASEBALL

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, Cal State Northridge 1--Leo Ramirez tossed a five-hitter and had eight strikeouts, but the Matadors lost the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game at San Luis Obispo.

Northridge (16-26, 7-10) scored in the eighth when Ted Weisfuss hit a leadoff double and Lenn Gilmore smacked a two-out single to score him.

John Bonilla (2 for 4) was the only Matador with more than one hit.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 53, San Bernardino 50--Hario Kajona and Mike McAllister each won two events as the Monarchs clinched the Southern California Conference title at Valley.

Kajona won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.5 and the 200 individual medley in 2:09.2.

McAllister, won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:13.8 and the 500 free in 5:20.5.

Pierce 73, College of the Canyons 25--Pat Wilson won two events to lead the Brahmas in a Western State Conference meet at Pierce.

Wilson won the 200-yard freestyle event in 1:55.2 and the 200 butterfly in 2:15.5.

Also for Pierce (2-4, 2-3), Andre Keil won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.6 seconds.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 91, San Bernardino 27--Shawna Sacks and Tracy Cordobes each won two events at Valley as the Lady Monarchs won the Southern California Conference championship. Sacks won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.1 and the 500 free in 5:36.5, while Cordobes won the 200-yard individual medley (2:28.0) and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.9).

Pierce 103, College of the Canyons 18--Kellie Rainey won four events to lead the Lady Brahmas to a Western State Conference win at Pierce. Rainey won the 50-yard breaststroke in 38.7 seconds, the 200-yard individual medley in 2:34.0 and the 100 individual medley in 1:11.5. She also was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team, which also included Shannon Breese, Stephanie Hoisch and Linda Drucker.

Breese also won the 50 backstroke (30.9), the 500 freestyle (5:37.6). Hoisch won the 50 free (25.4) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.3). Drucker won the 100 freestyle in 1:02.3.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Mt. San Antonio College, 15-9, 15-2, 15-13--Rico Guimaraes had 12 kills and Joel Shaver added three kills to lead the Brahmas to a Southern California Conference victory at Pierce.
