Kids’ Day on the Beach at Santa Monica

At the second annual Kids’ Day today in Santa Monica, the beach and pier will be filled with dozens of free activities designed to appeal to children of all ages.
A skateboarding contest starts at 10 a.m. at the beach parking lot north of the pier. The Westside Art Center will sponsor a sunglasses- and kite-making workshop on the pier from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Westside Children’s Museum invites visitors to join a sand-sculpting project on the beach from noon to 4 p.m.
Also on the beach north of the pier will be a Superkids contest from noon to 3 p.m. Children, who may sign up on the spot, will compete in the obstacle course and other races. South of the pier a volleyball tournament for teen-agers will start at 1 p.m. In the beach parking lot, police cars, fire trucks and some of the bigger municipal vehicles such as tree-trimming trucks will be on display all day.
On the pier, volunteers will do face painting from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the carrousel. An international folk dancing workshop begins at noon, followed by a creative movement workshop at 1 and a karate demonstration at 3. And the carrousel and bumper cars will be free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
In addition to pay parking lots at the beach, a free trolley shuttle will run from Lincoln and John Adams junior high schools from noon to 5 p.m. Information: (213) 458-8311.
