‘The Father/Ester’
Sweden, 1912/1987, 86 minutes , 5:30 p.m . “Father” is an ancient curio worth preserving. Director Anna Hofman-Uddgren innovated less in technique (essentially “canned theater”) than subject in her adaptation of August Strindberg. Daringly downbeat for its era. Also: “Ester:” the conflicts between love and art in a relationship between a frustrated portraitist and her famous painter husband. The movie, like its heroine, exudes inner torment under a languorous, pretty surface.
