College Baseball : Kaub Leads Cal State Fullerton to 4-1 Victory Over UC Irvine

Keith Kaub hit two home runs Monday to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 4-1 victory over UC Irvine in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game at UC Irvine.

Kaub’s first home run came with two outs in the third inning and broke a 1-1 tie. His second, also a two-out solo home run in the eighth inning that soared 435 feet to the center-field screen, put Fullerton (34-11 overall, 12-3 in conference play and ranked No. 6) ahead, 4-1.

Fullerton’s Brent Mayne extended his record hitting streak to 27 games, when he led off the first with a single. Mayne later scored from third when Bobby Jones hit into a bases-loaded double play to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Irvine (26-24-1, 5-10) tied the score, 1-1, in the third when Doug Kline doubled home John Seeburger.

Danny DeVille improved to 6-0 with 6 strikeouts, 3 walks and only 6 hits. Irvine’s Dean Douty dropped to 5-6. Jim Osborne, Mike Ross and Rex Peters each had two hits for Fullerton.

Southern California College 4, Biola 3--Jeff Motske’s single in the top of the 11th inning scored Kevin Kasper as SCC won an NAIA District 3 game suspended because of darkness after 10 innings March 7 at Biola.

Kasper singled to open the 11th, and went to second on a wild pitch.

Josh Johnson (6-4) earned the victory for SCC (17-23, 10-8).
