Prep Softball : Longeway Tosses 2-Hitter, Kennedy Wins Again, 8-0

Freshman Cheryl Longeway (15-2) pitched a 2-hitter and struck out 16 for Kennedy High School, leading the Irish to an 8-0 Garden Grove League softball victory over host Santiago.

Kennedy (18-3, 8-0) scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Deanna Mays had a triple and Suzie Burgess had a three-run single.

In the Century League:

Canyon 4, Foothill 0--Katie Cramer extended her scoreless-inning streak to 40 with 6 shutout innings in a victory at Canyon. Cramer (9-3) struck out five and combined with Sara Roberts for a two-hitter. Tina French had a two-run double in the third inning for Canyon (12-6, 4-1).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 3, Troy 2--Fullerton improved its league record to 3-1 at Troy. Fullerton (7-12 overall) scored its runs in the fourth inning. Hilary Heusser walked with the bases loaded to force in Sabrina Welch. Isara Compos added a two-run single. Winning pitcher Janet Gallant gave up four hits.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 1, Magnolia 0--Michele Granger (15-3) pitched a one-hitter, but Valencia’s injury woes continued. Valencia (16-5, 3-2), which lost catcher Valerie Finley two weeks ago to a broken wrist, lost Christy Valdez and Robin Rassmussen to serious injuries. Valdez suffered a broken wrist going after the one hit Granger gave up. And Rassmussen, who scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning, broke her nose tagging out a runner at second.

Western 9, Anaheim 2--Western (10-8, 4-0) stayed atop the league with the victory at Anaheim. Winning pitcher Dena Petersen gave up five hits in five innings, and Lisa Sciarrino had a two-run triple in the first inning.

Brea-Olinda 3, Savanna 0 (12 innings)--Kelly Cook (13-3) threw a 2-hitter, striking out 14, for Brea-Olinda (14-3, 4-1) at Savanna. Tara Marlow singled in the first run for Brea in the 12th inning. The Wildcats scored twice more on errors. Nadine Ditto (7-9) struck out 14, but took the loss for Savanna (8-10, 2-3).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 3, Marina 1 (11 innings)--Janet Miyhahara’s bases-loaded single scored Shannon Dolan and broke a 1-1 tie at Marina. Kami Bigler followed with a sacrifice fly to score Mignon Taylor. Winning pitcher Rae Rice struck out 10. Fountain Valley is 18-4 and 4-0.

Edison 1, Huntington Beach 0 (16 innings)--Edison’s Terry Carpenter gave up 2 hits and struck out 23 batters at Huntington Beach. Edison (13-5-1, 3-1-1) scored the winning run when Kim Jones singled home Karen Nivinskus in the 16th.

Ocean View 5, Westminster 0--Cindy Schneller (8-7) threw a 2-hitter, striking out 5, for host Ocean View (12-8, 3-1). Marla Pickard and Jamie Walker each had two hits for Ocean View. Walker also drove in a run.

In the Collegiate League:

Elliott Pope 10, St. Margaret’s 9--Pitcher Michele Rea took the loss at St. Margaret’s (4-8, 0-2).

In the Sunrise League:

Rosary 15, Sacred Heart 1--Winning pitcher Suzi Canney (6-3) gave up 1 hit and struck out 6 at Sacred Heart. Juli Alig went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs for Rosary (12-6, 5-0).
