Local News in Brief : May Day Parade Upheld

Share

A federal judge on Thursday overturned a Los Angeles Police Commission ban on the Progressive Labor Party’s downtown May Day parade route.

U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson said the city failed to persuade him that blocking bus traffic on Broadway for 90 minutes during the parade would cause a significant disruption of downtown traffic.

Before the hearing, the group vowed to stage Sunday’s parade along Broadway even if it had to use the sidewalk. May Day is the holiday traditionally used by communist countries and groups to honor workers.

Assistant City Atty. Byron Boeckman said the Police Commission planned to ban all weekend parades on Broadway, and the PLP march was simply the first to be affected. The city had asked that the parade be held on less traveled Spring Street.
