Baseball : Shockey Boosts Mater Dei to 3-1 Victory

Greg Shockey hit a bases-loaded single to drive in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and help lead Mater Dei to a 3-1 victory over Bishop Amat in Angelus League baseball Wednesday.

Shockey, a left fielder, also climbed the fence to take a home run away in the top of the fifth.

Tony Pena (8-1) tossed a seven-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk for Mater Dei (18-2, 10-2). He didn’t allow a hit after the third inning. Bishop Amat is 7-5 in league play.

Mater Dei’s Mike Mahler was 2 for 3, doubling in the sixth and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mike Basse for the final margin of victory.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 6, La Habra 0--Rene Arias (6-1) threw a three-hitter, striking out three, to lead Fullerton (15-7, 8-4) at La Habra. Fullerton scored twice in the first inning, on an RBI double by Jeff Manship and a run-scoring single by Lee Green. Jeff DePhillips hit a solo home run for Fullerton in the seventh.

Sunny Hills 6, Troy 1--Host Troy (7-12-1, 4-8) made eight errors that led to eight unearned runs for Sunny Hills (10-12, 6-6). Jason Sugarman went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Mike McGwire went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Sunny Hills.

Sonora 7, Buena Park 1--Darryn Martin (5-1) struck out seven in six innings and Kevin Cook went 2 for 3 with a 3-run home run and 5 RBIs for host Sonora (12-10, 8-4).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 11, Los Amigos 0--James Marquez (7-3) won his seventh consecutive game and continued his mastery in the Garden Grove League. Marquez has allowed just 1 run in 32 innings of league play. On Wednesday, he had 11 strikeouts and 1 walk and allowed just 3 hits. Jerry Arneson, Jason Parsons and Bob Heyl each hit a homer for host La Quinta (20-4, 11-0).

Rancho Alamitos 5, Pacifica 0--Ryan Flanagan (7-1) threw a three-hitter and pitched around five walks with the help of two double plays for host Rancho Alamitos (12-11, 6-5). Mike Willey had three hits and an RBI and scored a run and Tom Mendoza had two hits and an RBI for Rancho Alamitos. Pacifica is 15-6 and 8-3.

Garden Grove 10, Kennedy 5--Marc Lung (3-8) allowed seven hits and two earned runs as visiting Garden Grove (5-14, 2-9) upset Kennedy (14-10, 8-3). Lung also had three hits and Matt Hall had two hits and three RBIs for Garden Grove.

Santiago 6, Bolsa Grande 4--Sean McCorry had two hits and an RBI and Adrian Borbon had a two-run single for visiting Santiago (10-14, 5-6). Carlos Leon (4-5) picked up the victory and Eric Scheifels (3-8), who had three hits, took the loss. Tony Alfaro had had four stolen bases for Santiago. Ghassan Hreishe had two hits and an RBI for Bolsa Grande.

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 8, Anaheim 2--Freshman Tony Truel went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs and Roberto Camarillo went 2 for 2 with an RBI for host Magnolia (8-11-1, 6-5-1). Ryan Jara hit a home run for Anaheim.

Valencia 12, Brea-Olinda 3--Mike Edwards had two hits and two RBIs and Anthony Davis had a solo home run for visiting Valencia (12-6-1, 8-3-1). Ed Garcia, Matt Gunn and Rob Ferencik each drove in a run for Brea-Olinda (4-17-1, 2-9-1).

Western 5, Savanna 4--Mark Holiday (5-3) struck out four, walked three and allowed six to lead Western (14-8-1, 8-3-1). Also for Western, Jason Diplock went 3 for 3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Eric Nygard had a two-run double in the fourth inning.
