A 26-year-old construction worker was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after running over his estranged wife’s male companion in a pickup truck, police said Friday.

Fountain Valley police said Rafael Torres of Huntington Beach was arrested without incident late Thursday at the Hughes Market parking lot on Garfield Avenue after he narrowly missed hitting his wife, Jeannette Torres, 27, then struck John Skinner, 41, of Garden Grove.

Skinner--who suffered a compound fracture of the right leg, torn ligaments in his left leg and internal injuries--was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital & Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Friday.

Rafael Torres was taken to County Jail in Santa Ana, where he was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, Fountain Valley Police Lt. Rob Gillman said. Jeannette Torres, a Stanton resident, was not injured.

According to Gillman, the attack followed several threats by Rafael Torres on his wife. “The husband had made death threats against her if he ever saw her with another male,” Gillman said, adding that Jeannette Torres had never contacted police about the threats.
