Two Southern California contractors were among six given top honors for “excellence in construction” at the first constructor awards banquet of the Associated General Contractors of California.

Southland winners were Turner Construction Co., of Los Angeles, for the One Westwood Plaza Building, for “innovation in construction technique and materials,” and Robert R. Nye Inc., Ventura, the Ojai Valley Trail, for “contribution to the community” category.

Turner overcame severe site problems in the construction of the 17-story office building and 8 floors of underground parking on a relatively small 170x128-foot site in Westwood. Nye transformed an abandoned railroad track adjacent to California 33 leading to Ojai, from an eyesore into a landscaped and well-used bicycle and horse trail.
