A San Francisco investment broker has died at a hospital of injuries suffered in an attack at a Solvang restaurant, authorities said Sunday.

Claxton A. Long, 47, a senior vice president of Sutro & Co., died Friday night at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

A 32-year-old welder was being held on suspicion of murder for allegedly attacking Long early Friday.

Sheriff’s Deputy James French said Long, an avid horseman, was in the area to participate in the Los Rancheros Vistadores outing, a horseback riding and camping retreat that attracts hundreds of Californians each year.

French said deputies were called to the Mollekroen Restaurant in Solvang about 1 a.m. Friday and found Long unconscious in the bar. He had been badly beaten.

“Apparently no weapons were involved,” French said. “The suspect beat him with just his fists.”

The suspect, identified as Randall Holland, fled after the attack and was arrested at his Santa Ynez home Friday morning, French said.

Long is survived by his wife, Judith, and two children from a previous marriage. Funeral services were pending.
