Shots Fired at Camp David

A Marine assigned to Camp David, Md., was undergoing psychiatric evaluation as a result of a May 1 shooting incident at the presidential retreat, the White House disclosed today.

White House spokeswoman Leslye Arsht said “a young Marine who became emotionally depressed” was being held at the Marine base at Quantico, Va., after the incident in which “a few shots were fired.” “Apparently, the Marine’s motives were directed toward himself,” she said, “and no hostile intent toward the President was expressed.” There were no injuries, she said. The incident took place “a considerable distance” from the presidential residence at Camp David on a day when Reagan was in Washington, she added.
