$300,000 Blaze Destroys Arts-Crafts Building at CSUN

A swift-moving fire gutted an arts-and-crafts building at Cal State Northridge on Monday, destroying the final projects of several art students.
Authorities estimated that the fire at the Halstead Art Annex in the 18100 block of West Halsted Avenue did $300,000 damage.
The fire was reported at 6:36 p.m. and was extinguished at 7:07 p.m., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Williamson. He said there were no injuries.
Williamson said the fire was sparked by someone using welding equipment. Ann Salisbury, a spokeswoman for the university, said the blaze destroyed the final art projects.
Fire officials said there was no connection between Monday’s fire and a blaze that did $160,000 damage to a nearby administrative bungalow Feb. 8. An electrical problem caused that fire, authorities said.
