Share

“My grandmother has made this recipe for years,” Sara Freathy writes. “She is now 95 years old and she is still baking this favorite for neighbors, friends and relatives. I have never known anyone who has made these cookies before, but I have shared the recipe many times. These cookies are delicious.”

ORANGE SLICE BAR COOKIES

4 eggs, lightly beaten

2 cups brown sugar, packed

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 tablespoon cold water

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

2 teaspoons vanilla

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 pound orange slice candy, finely cut up

Beat eggs lightly in large bowl. Add brown sugar, flour, baking powder, cold water, cinnamon, nuts, vanilla, salt and candy pieces. Mix until blended. Spread in lightly greased and wax-paper lined 13x9-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees 30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes on rack then invert on bread board. Spread with Icing. Cut into 3x1 1/2-inch bars. Makes 2 dozen bars.

Icing

1 cup powdered sugar

1 tablespoon soft butter

2 teaspoons grated orange peel

Orange juice

Combine powdered sugar with butter, orange peel and enough orange juice to be of spreadable consistency.
