Smoke in Airliner Cockpit Causes Emergency Landing

ST. LOUIS —
A Trans World Airlines DC-9 with 41 passengers aboard made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff because of smoke in the cockpit, officials said. Flight 643 for Madison, Wis., had just taken off Wednesday night when the pilot reported the smoke and returned to Lambert International Airport. The source of the smoke was being investigated.
