A day after he failed to appear in a Detroit court to answer a cocaine possession charge, David Ruffin, former lead singer of the Temptations, was in a Detroit jail on Tuesday, a court official said. Ruffin was reported missing when he failed to show up after a concert date in North Carolina, but his attorney said Ruffin’s flight was delayed. The singer appeared in court voluntarily and was ordered placed in Wayne County Jail until Thursday, when his trial is scheduled to resume, a clerk for Detroit Recorder’s Court Judge John O’Brien told the Associated Press. The clerk said bail for Ruffin, who sang lead on a series of Motown Records hits in the 1960s, was increased from $1,500 to $100,000. Ruffin, who was arrested when police found a pouch containing cocaine residue during a July raid on his home, was supposed to appear in a Detroit court on Monday for opening arguments in his cocaine possession trial. If convicted, the singer could face up to four years in jail.
