Wilson Says He Will Not Report Until Signed

The new Raider coach, Mike Shanahan, is starting to install his version of the Raider offense this week in a mini-camp for quarterbacks and receivers, but without the man thought to be in line to be his No. 1 signal caller, Marc Wilson.

Wilson, unsigned and a free agent, is home in Seattle and says he won’t report without a contract.

The question is, will the Raiders try to sign him, or will Al Davis, who isn’t thought to be Wilson’s chief supporter, turn his thoughts elsewhere?

“It doesn’t look like I’m coming,” Wilson said Tuesday from his home. “We just haven’t come to any kind of agreement. I don’t think it’s in my best interests to come to mini-camp.

“I’d like to be there. From what I understand, they’re making some changes in the offense. The terminology has changed. They’re going to try some different ideas. I had hoped to be there.

“From my standpoint, I feel like if they wanted me to be there, they should have made a strong effort (to sign him). I haven’t seen a strong effort yet. Which makes me skeptical of what’s going to happen.”

According to Wilson, they haven’t really begun talking money.

When they do, the Raiders will find that Wilson’s position is flexible enough to at least consider taking a cut in last season’s $1 million salary.

“It would depend on how it was all structured,” Wilson said. “Certainly it wouldn’t be rejected just because it was a cut in pay. I realize I was paid very well.”
