Pepperdine’s Weiss, Sznajder Advance
Pepperdine’s Robby Weiss and Andrew Sznajder and UCLA’s Buff Farrow advanced, while five of the top eight seeded players were eliminated Wednesday in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. individual men’s tennis championships at the University of Georgia.
Weiss, seeded No. 1, defeated Jari Koho of Utah, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round and Malcolm Allen of San Jose State, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round. Sznajder, seeded third, defeated Rich Benson of Kentucky, 7-6, 6-2, and Stephen Enochs of Georgia, 6-2, 6-2.
Farrow, seeded fifth, defeated John Falbo of Kansas, 6-4, 6-4, and Richard Lubner of UC Irvine, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Brian Garrow of UCLA upset eighth-seeded Greg Van Emburgh of Kentucky, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, in the second round.
Also upset was second-seeded Scott Melville of USC, who lost to Olivier Lorin of Oklahoma, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the opening round.
USC’s Eric Amend pulled another of the upsets, defeating No. 7 Dan Goldberg of Michigan.
