Alfred P. Fernandez, chancellor for the Ventura County Community College District, has been named chancellor of the Coast Community College District in Orange County.

Fernandez, 54, chancellor of the Ventura district since 1982, will leave July 15, said Barbara Derryberry, vice chancellor for personnel and affirmative action.

Derryberry said the Ventura district’s governing board will hold a special meeting Tuesday to discuss the selection process for a new chancellor.

Fernandez, who earns $87,400 a year in Ventura, will make $97,500 a year in Orange County plus a $400 monthly expense account and a monthly mileage allowance of $220. That salary has been criticized by some Orange County educators who complain that faculty only received a 2% pay raise this year.

Fernandez came under fire from the Ventura teachers’ union, the American Federation of Teachers, Local 1828, earlier this year over prolonged faculty salary negotiations. He received a no-confidence vote from the Ventura college district faculty in April.

The 10-month negotiations ended in April when both sides agreed to a 12% salary increase over two years.

Fernandez said that, in addition to the Orange County district, he was recruited for the position of chancellor in the Los Angeles and Long Beach community college systems.
