School Administrator to Change Districts

Montebello resident Julian T. Lopez has been named superintendent of the Mountain View School District, which operates 11 elementary schools through eighth grade in El Monte and South El Monte. Lopez will leave his job as assistant superintendent for instructional services in the Montebello Unified School District. He has 27 years of experience in education, including having been director of bilingual education, supervisor of pupil personnel services, a high school and elementary school principal, counselor and classroom teacher. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western New Mexico University and a doctorate from United States International University at San Diego. Lopez will begin his new job July 1, succeeding Alfred S. Madrid of Hacienda Heights, who is retiring after 22 years in the Mountain View district and 14 years as superintendent.

Chairman Named for Scout-O-Rama Event

William S. Husak, chairman of the physical education department at Cal State Long Beach, is serving as chairman of this year’s Scout-O-Rama sponsored by the Long Beach Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. Hundreds of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from Long Beach troops will gather June 4 on the university campus to display projects and demonstrate their skills in camping craft, safety, citizenship and other activities. Former Olympic high-jumper Dwight Stones will participate.

2 Reappointed to Norwalk Planning Board

Jerry Froehlich and Herb Williams have been reappointed to the Norwalk Planning Commission. Councilman Mike Mendez, who was elected last month, named Froehlich as his commissioner, and Councilman Bob White, reelected last month, retained Williams as his representative. Previously appointed by former Councilwoman Peg Nelson, Froehlich has been on the commission since 1979. Williams has been a commissioner since 1969.

Reading Professor Speaks at Conference

Bill Broderick, reading department chairman at Cerritos College, was invited to present a proposal on the use of computers in college-level reading to the National Conference on Teaching Excellence held last weekend in Texas. The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Staff and Organization Development at the University of Texas at Austin.

Chiropractic College Graduates Honored

The Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in Whittier held commencement exercises for 138 graduates. Special honors were presented to Chi Ngoc Ho, valedictorian; Thomas Wong, student service award; Kevin Sharp, president’s award; and Dee Stevens, Student American Chiropractic Assn. award. Georgie Pryal, vice chairman of the college Board of Regents, delivered the commencement address.

Officers of Rio Hondo Legal Secretaries Assn.

The Rio Hondo District of the Legal Secretaries Assn. held its 39th annual installation brunch at the La Vie en Rose restaurant in Brea. New officers for the 40-member Whittier area group are Kathy Martinez, president; Pauline Barnett, first vice president; Jeanne Rees, second vice president; Jeannette Carsrud, treasurer; Carol Price and Isabel Cirasole, secretaries. Whittier attorney Del Hovden, who is Martinez’ boss, was the installing officer. Diane Pepe, chairman of the Los Angeles County Forum of 14 member associations, was the installing marshal.

Woman Wins Ribbon for Shirt Applique

Bellflower Adult School student Alice Rickert won top craft honors and a sweepstakes blue ribbon at a fine arts festival in Lynwood sponsored by the Los Cerritos District of the California Federation of Women’s Clubs. She won by exhibiting a shirt painting applique learned in the school’s home decorative arts program, which is in its 15th year in the Bellflower Unified School District.

Professor Will Serve on National Panel

Hugh Wilkoff, business professor at Cerritos College, has been selected as one of 10 members of a national advisory committee for the development of Caseworks, a business law course. He will help review course materials and television scripts for each lesson and select study guide material.

Carmenita Junior High Orators Win

Four Carmenita Junior High School students won first and second place in oratorical contests sponsored by the Suburban and Cerritos Optimist clubs. First-place gold medals were won by Cathy Driggs and David Yu. Second-place silver medals went to Gerald Savellano and Kerri Aldrich.
