Simulation of a major earthquake will bend steel, liquefy rubber and destroy a dry wall Thursday during the first public demonstration of the UC Irvine School of Engineering’s structures-testing wall. One of the strongest in the county, the testing wall is 22 feet tall, 58 1/2 feet long and three feet thick. It remains stationary as computer-operated shaking equipment is used to apply up to 2 million pounds of pressure to structures attached to the wall with steel bolts.

The demonstration is part of an open house tour and dedication ceremony for the school’s new Engineering Laboratory Facility.
