Poor Ron Daniels.

The people who made his robe for Tuesday night’s 10-round main event at the Reseda Country Club put the name Ron Danial on the back.

Ring announcer Michael Buffer introduced Daniels, who uses the nickname Scrap Iron, as Scrap Iron Johnson, mixing him up with a former fighter.

And Michael Nunn of North Hollywood, Daniels’ opponent, looked across the ring and saw Frank Tate, the International Boxing Federation middleweight champion.

At least Nunn pretended he was fighting Tate as he pounded away at the 161-pound Daniels, scoring an easy knockout at 2:51 of the second round.

Nunn won’t have to pretend long. Tate, in the flesh, will be Nunn’s next opponent, July 28 at Caesars Palace, with the IBF title on the line.

“I told myself it was Frank Tate out there,” said the 160 1/2-pound Nunn, who is 30-0 with 20 knockouts. “I wanted to look like dynamite.”

That he did after taking a couple of strong body shots early in the second round. Nunn responded with everything in his arsenal--left hooks, straight rights, overhand lefts--and Daniels (11-7) finally collapsed from the barrage of punches. Before referee John Thomas could finish counting, Al Jackson, Daniels’ manager, was in the ring to end the evening for the Paso Robles’ fighter.

In the semi-main event before a sellout crowd of 960, Hugo Anguiano of Los Angeles knocked Abe Gomez of Pacoima down in the second round and went on to win the state featherweight crown with a unanimous 12-round decision.

For Anguiano, it was the second time in two months he had beaten Gomez. Both fights were held at the Country Club and both ended in unanimous decisions. They are the only losses suffered by the 125-pound Gomez, who is 10-2.
