Mickelson Tries to Defend Golf Title

The top high school teams and individuals will compete in the Southern California CIF golf championships at the La Jolla Country Club today, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Phil Mickelson of the University of San Diego High School will defend the title he won last year at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake.

San Diego Section golfers will be led by Mickelson, the 1988 section champion, and Harry Rudolph of La Jolla, a two-time section champion. Carlsbad, the section team champion, and runner-up La Jolla will compete in the team competition.

The team title will be decided by one 18-hole round in the morning. The top 10 individuals from the morning round will play another 18 holes to decide a boys’ and girls’ champion. The girls will tee off on the first hole at 1 p.m. and the boys will tee off on the 10th at 2:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Outfielder Cory Powell of Patrick Henry and catcher Eric Slinkard of Chula Vista have been drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

Juan Price, an infielder from Sweetwater, was drafted by Philadelphia, and shortstop Javier Brown of Morse was drafted by Milwaukee.

Pitcher Mark Ringkamp, a sophomore at Palomar College who attended Fallbrook High School, was drafted by Seattle.
