World javelin champion Fatima Whitbread won her eighth consecutive national title with a throw of 230 feet but was outshone by Britain’s latest hope, 19-year-old Steve Backley, in the men’s event at Derby, England.
Backley recorded the longest throw in history by a teen-ager--260 feet 10 inches--to break the world junior record of Finland’s Juha Laukkanen by 1 1/2 inches.
