Finland

I enjoyed reading Robert C. Toth’s article “ ‘Finlandization’: No Longer a Dirty Word” (Part I, May 28). However, there is something which might be clarified. One of the paragraphs begins with “The Finns, having fought World War II on the German side, were very careful immediately afterward not to antagonize the Soviets further.” It is good to point out that the Soviet Union declared war on Finland on Nov. 28, 1939, and attacked them two days later. In his book, “The Gathering Storm,” Winston Churchill describes it as an “unprovoked attack by the enormous Soviet power upon a small, spirited, and highly civilized nation. . . .” Germany’s attack on the Soviet Union in June of 1941 was a separate matter.
