Local News in Brief : Garbage Fee Plan Gains
The Los Angeles Board of Public Works has taken the first step toward requiring residents to pay a fee for garbage collection, which up to now has been financed through the general revenues available to the City Council.
The fees would not actually be levied unless the mayor and City Council agree, and neither has indicated any inclination to impose a new fee on city residents.
Nonetheless, the Board of Public Works--an appointed body that oversees garbage collection and other city services--voted to adopt the principle that residents should pay the actual costs of garbage collection.
Director of Sanitation Delwin A. Biaggi said the fee for an average home could be as high as $10 a month to fully pay the costs of providing the service.
