Santa Monica : Latino Study Center Opening

Share

A center for studying Latino culture is opening on the Westside.

The Institute for Hispanic Cultural Studies will inaugurate its new office at 2050 Colorado Ave., Suite 103, on Sunday. An open house is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m.

The center will provide research materials and information on Latino culture, as well as a series of poetry readings, music recitals and panel discussions.

“This fulfills a real need for Westside Latinos,” said Mary Helen de la Pena, director of the institute. “We get tired of hearing about gangs, drugs and dropouts when there is so much more to our culture.”

Although the institute has existed as a nonprofit agency for around four years, it has not had permanent offices until now. The space is provided rent-free by the Southmark Corp., developers of the Colorado Place office complex.
