Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Vote Scheduled on Direct Elections for Mayors

Share

The city’s voters will be asked in November to decide whether they want to continue direct election of the mayor or let City Council members make the selection, city officials said.

City Clerk Leonora Sohl said the City Council voted this week to place the issue on the ballot in November, when Mayor Ben Bay’s term ends.

If approved, the measure would revoke a city charter provision providing for the direct election of the mayor. The choice of mayor would then be left to the council members.

In another action, the council rejected a request to add a second night meeting each month, Sohl said.

“The primary reason that most of the council members gave is that their schedules are already too heavy,” she said. “And, night meetings can run real late.”

At Tuesday’s meeting, some residents complained that many people are unable to air their views before the council under the present schedule, Sohl said. Currently, the council holds an evening session on the first Tuesday of each month and holds the remainder of its meetings on Tuesday afternoons.
