The Magic of ‘Miz’

Regarding Dan Sullivan’s review of “Les Miz’ ” opening-night performance--why, in the name of John Q. Public, can’t you send in a reviewer who has not seen the show before (“ ‘Lez Miz’ Barrels Into Town,” June 3)?

It is not fair to the public to have someone critique a performance, who has admittedly seen “Les Miserables” twice before. Anyone who has ever seen a show/movie more than once knows that each time you see it differently, and often pay more attention to incidental details rather than just enjoying what you came to see.

Of course, his eyes remained dry as Eponine lay dying in the arms of Marius--Sullivan’s third viewing of the scene had made him immune. The questions he raised regarding the story line are inane--does he want to change the book and lose the last scene?

I feel sorry that Sullivan couldn’t be caught up in the magic of Javert’s bridge scene, as well as the entire barricade scene. As a first-time viewer, I would be inspired to see it again--pocket-book permitting, but having seen it, I will consider it a most remarkable and memorable piece of theater.
