Local News in Brief : New Sewage Plant Snag

Share

El Segundo officials have ordered a review of a permit granted to Los Angeles for expansion of the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant, saying the project is causing problems for area residents.

Los Angeles, which runs the plant, is building a new sedimentation tank to comply with a federal court order calling for better treatment of sewage at the giant facility. It sought a conditional-use permit from El Segundo because 6% of the tank is in that city.

In January, El Segundo council members won assurances that Los Angeles would control odors from the plant and prevent construction problems. But the council ordered the Planning Department to review the permit this week after several residents complained that construction workers failed to clean up large amounts of sand that has blown from the project into their yards and onto the sides of their homes.

A $2-million fund to take care of potential claims was established by Los Angeles officials before construction began.
