Cavarretta Interrupted Play to Play

Share

The Bernie Milligan All-Star Game game did not exactly end as Mark Cavarretta had hoped, but maybe he can take solace in the fact that nobody from the victorious East team is sitting in Hawaii right now.

Cavarretta, a Crespi senior whose clutch two-run single in the top of the ninth helped the West rally from a seven-run deficit to tie the score, 10-10, also had an important role in the bottom of the inning. Cavarretta, playing at first, tried to throw out East baserunner Tom Dodson, who had been picked off first by pitcher Dan Carroll. Cavarretta’s throw to shortstop Brian Eldridge, however, ended up in center field and the winning run scored on the play to give the East an 11-10 win. Eldridge was given the error on the play.

Cavarretta, who hit .417 this season, had been vacationing in Hawaii with several Crespi seniors. His mother volunteered to pick up the air fare so he could fly home, play in Saturday’s game, then return to Hawaii to, well, play some more.

Cavarretta took his glove and bat to Hawaii with him and took practice swings in his hotel room to prepare for the game. He was 1 for 3 and scored a run. He also walked and was hit by a pitch.
