A new post office will open its doors to the public today in Sherman Oaks.

The Sherman Oaks postal station, at 14900 Magnolia Blvd., will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, said station Manager Gary Armstrong.

The facility “is designed to speed up postal transactions,” he said. It has seven service windows, 2,628 post office boxes for rent and parcel lockers near the post office box section with pickup hours until 9 p.m.

For the past two years the Sherman Oaks station, which is part of the U.S. Postal Service’s Van Nuys Division, has been operating out of four mobile trailers that were on the same property as the new facility.

The new customer parking lot will have 41 customer spaces available in about four weeks, Armstrong said. A temporary parking lot will be available until then.

The Sherman Oaks letter carrier operation, now at 14721 Califa Street, will move to the new facility in about a month, Armstrong said.

Additional postal services will be available to Sherman Oaks patrons from two contract stations at Maxon’s Drugs, 13303 Riverside Drive, and Jet Photo, 14210 Ventura Blvd. The contract stations will be open on Saturdays, as well as during the week, Armstrong said.

The new building was not affected by a $1.2-billion cut in the Postal Service budget made by Congress in December because the facility already was under construction, he said.
