Local News in Brief : Drowning Victims Found
The bodies of two youths who apparently drowned after becoming entangled in weeds were recovered Tuesday from the bottom of a small lake in the Angeles National Forest.
Four Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department scuba divers found the bodies of the Palmdale youths, 17 and 18, submerged in Jackson Lake about 4 p.m., Deputy Dan Cox said.
The teen-agers, who were spending the day in the Big Pines area with a friend, paddled out about 20 feet before they were seen floundering in the water, Cox said.
Their companion swam out to help, but the pair had already disappeared under the surface.
Cox said the two boys, whose names were not released until relatives could be notified, apparently became entangled in weeds growing out of thick silt at the bottom of the lake, which is about 100 yards wide and 200 yards long.
Deputies said the boys, students at Palmdale High School, apparently had cut classes for the day.
