Local News in Brief : Change to New Trash Firm Voted
The Gardena City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to award the city’s residential waste collection contract to Western Waste Industries, a move that city officials estimate will save Gardena residents about $72,000 over the life of the five-year contract.
The council selected Western Waste over four other firms after the city’s contract with BFI Waste Systems came up for bid.
Beginning July 1, Western Waste will collect trash at all single-family homes, mobile homes and residences of four units or less for a monthly fee of $6.35 per household for 1988-89. BFI Waste Systems charged $7.12.
The five-year contract with Western Waste will increase incrementally to $8.32 per month by 1992-1993, the last year of the contract. The routes and schedule for trash pick-up will remain unchanged, city officials said.
