An anonymous philanthropist has endowed London’s Tate Gallery with a trust fund worth $6.4 million for the purchase of American art works, the gallery has announced. A spokesman for the Tate said Monday that the money--coming from “a British businessman based in New York”--could fund the acquisition of at least one major work a year. The gift comes at a time when the Tate has had its government grant, unchanged at $3 million for the past eight years, frozen for three more years. Last month, the government’s advisers on national galleries called for more state money for new works.
