Citing a knee injury, Mikhail Baryshnikov has canceled his entire summer tour, organizers said Wednesday. Baryshnikov was to open his summer American Baryshnikov and Company tour July 1 at an amusement park outside of Dallas, but the dancer’s tour manager said Baryshnikov had aggravated a knee injury and will undergo surgery. A statement released by tour officials added: “The subsequent recovery period will be determined by the findings of the surgery performed by Dr. (William) Hamilton.” Said Baryshnikov through his personal manager, Edgar Vincent in New York: “I deeply regret that I will not be able to perform this summer.” As to the possibility of the ensemble touring without him, the tour manager sniffed, “How can you sell Baryshnikov and Company without Baryshnikov?”
