Whittier : Rezoning Passes on Appeal
Over the protests of the Planning Commission and Whittier residents, the City Council has unanimously voted to change the zoning on four acres north of Lambert Road between Mills Avenue and Colima Road. Property owner Robert Lasken filed plans to build a 64,000-square-foot mini-storage complex on the former railroad right of way which would have required a zone change from residential to transitional.
Fearing a decline in property values and increased traffic in the area, residents asked that the property remain an R-1 zone, allowing only one living unit per lot. The Planning Commission opposed the zone change at a meeting last month, and Lasken appealed to the City Council.
Mayor Victor A. Lopez supported the zone change, saying that it was unlikely that the property would be developed for residential use. Lasken must now return to the Planning Commission for a conditional-use permit.
