A shocked John McEnroe’s Wimbledon comeback ended today in a flurry of missed chances and shout-punctuated disputes over two crucial line calls.

The three-time champion blew set points in the first and second sets and lost his second-round match to Wally Masur of Australia, ranked 64th in the world, 7-5, 7-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, old-timers Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors posted victories, and newcomer Jim Grabb, a Stanford champion playing at Wimbledon for only the second year, upset 11th-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden.
